Pediatric dentistry or pedodontia is a branch of dentistry which deals with preventive and therapeutic procedures in order to maintain oral health of children from their birth to late adolescence.
It is extremely important that your child's first visit to the dentist is a positive experience. You as parents have an important role in creating a positive atmosphere. If you are nervous when you visit, that will unconsciously pass on to your child.
The first visit should be very brief and without any unpleasant interventions or actions. This should be a short visit with the aim of creating a friendly relationship with the dentist and getting to know the practice.
Your role as a parent is crucial in gaining the habit of regular and proper oral hygiene. Proper teeth brushing from an early age prevents accumulation of dental plaque and caries. If caries does occur on the primary teeth, then it is important to seal them in order to prevent the movement of tooth, as well as the movement of other teeth. If you are not sure about the correct way of brushing teeth, we will be happy to advise you on how to properly brush your child's teeth.
It is important that your child visits the dentist and does his first dental check-up before the age of 7. In this way we make sure that the bones and jaw are developing properly. In case there is a movement of teeth in an abnormal and unnatural position, problems in the bite area may arise. This can be corrected using orthodontic braces which will enable a correct further development of the jaw.
Children's playfulness, lack of fear, physical activities and various other situations can cause damaging of the baby or permanent teeth. Whether it comes to broken crowns, roots or complete loss of tooth, it is very important that you take your child to the dentist. If the child is actively engaged in some contact sport, we recommend making an individual mouthpiece (splint) to prevent tooth injuries.
